Clear, a biometric screening program used in airports across the country, and the technology company IBM have created their own passes, for instance. There are already a number of vaccination “passport” initiatives underway that would make vaccination status easy to share digitally. Those unvaccinated will be instructed to wear a mask, practice social distancing and depending on the venue, could be assigned to a section specific to their vaccination status. In New York, for example, which reopened in May, proof of vaccination or a recent negative test may be required for entry into some large venues or catered events. With some destinations, cruise lines and venues already requiring travelers to provide proof of vaccination against Covid-19, keeping that record is key. This space is one of those.As vaccinations become more widely available for people in the United States and travel starts picking up, many people have started sharing their vaccination cards on social media as prized new possessions. Traces can felt or imagined through time. Certain spaces are redolent with histories: things have happened there. They are the result of natural forces acting on these surfaces: of wind, rain, decomposition, mould, heat and humidity. They are the result of human activity: of re-posting information in a single place, re-painting and restructuring walls, changing usage, using graffiti. However, these drawings are not created from first principles by an artist to exhibit in a gallery. These are sections of walls or floors that have all the attributes of visual art: texture, complexity, diversity of mark, gesture and arresting colour combinations. Over the last twenty years, I have been photographing, collecting and archiving ‘unconscious’ drawings and paintings. My contribution to this exhibition is a small selection of photographs is from a single space: a collection of surfaces around a piazza in Chiusa Sclafani, Sicily.
